How to Generate Random Numberson the TI-84 Plus

This TI-84 Plus calculator has a massive amount of digits arranged in a list, called a random number table which it utilizes for its calculations to generate random numbers.

Generating random integers

For you to generate random integer,follow these steps:

  1. To activate the randInt Wizard from the Math PROB menu, pressIf you're using a T-84 Plus, there is no wizard that can run the randint command. To utilize the command, you need to know its syntax, which is randint(lower, upper, [number of elements]).A Wizard makes the process of entering data simple. A wizard arranges the information you input in a manner that fits the syntax of the command. Check out the wizard on the screen that opens. image1.jpg
  2. Select the lower limit, and the higher limit you wish for your number of randoms to be.You would like a random number that ranges from 1 to 100. Press [ENTER] or the down-arrow key to navigate to the next line of the wizard.
  3. Enter n, to determine how many random numbers you wish to generate.Press [ENTER] repeatedly to generate more random numbers as seen in the second screen.
  4. If you would like to generatea list of random integers then change what you want to do with n.See 3rd screen in.

Generating random integerswith no repetition

Did you notice that the integer 52, was selected twice on the 3rd screen? If you're creating an assortment of random integers it is possible to avoid repeats by using a different procedure. These are the steps to follow:

  1. To activate the randIntNoRep Wizard by using the Math PROB menu, click image2.jpgSee at the top of the screen.On the TI-84 Plus, the randIntNoRep command does not include wizards to aid you. The syntax for the command is randIntNoRep(lower,upper). Like the TI-84 Plus C that you can't use, this command doesn't give you an option to adjust how many terms you can use. image3.jpg
  2. Input the upper and lower limits, as well as you will be able to enter the upper and lower limits as well as n (the total number of terms).See another screen.
  3. Press [ENTER] until your numbers are generated.This can be seen in the 3rd screen.

Generating random decimals

It is very easy to generate random decimal numbers that are strictly between 0 and 1. Press

Seeding the generator that generates random numbers

Your calculator generates random numbers from the vast number of digits presented in an alphabetical list. Here's the exciting part. You can choose where on the list that you would like your calculator to generate random numbers. It's called"seeding" the number.

Try to be creative with the number you select for your calculator's seed. It's a lot of fun! Calculate how many days you have been alive. Calculators have commands that will figure it out for you! You can follow these instructions:

  1. Use [2nd][0] to access the Catalog.Notice the calculator is currently in Alpha mode, as indicated by the blinking A that appears in the cursor.
  2. To add the DBD( function click image6.jpgdbd means days between dates.
  3. Enter your birthdate as an integer in this format: MM.DDYY.Dates need to occur between 1950-2049. This form, June 1, 1968 will be entered with the following number: 06.0168.
  4. Press [,].
  5. Input today's date as a number in this format: MM.DDYY. January 2 2012 is entered using the number: 01.0213.
  6. Enter [ENTER] and learn how many days you have lived alive.See the initial screen. Wow! 16,286 days is aged! image7.jpg

The steps to make sure you are seeding your calculator correctly:

  1. Enter the number that you will be selecting to start your calculator. 16286. Naturally, you can use any number in real life to seed your calculator.
  2. Pressimage8.jpg
  3. To insert the rand command, press image9.jpg
  4. Press [ENTER] to start seeding your calculator.See on the right side of your screen. of the next screen.
  5. Try it out! Utilize randInt( to generate an random number.See the last line in the second screen.

Are you looking to impress your peers? Seed your calculator with results you have in mind. If, for instance, you deliberately seed your calculator with this number 16286 and then the next three numbers (from zero to 1000) which will be created will include 203 213, and 197 as displayed in three screens. Just don't share your secret!
